How M&E fits into the program cycle
M&E is an intrinsic part of the program cycle. In order to improve the work that we do and manage program performance, we need to look to see whether our program is achieving its intended results and if not, we need to modify our actions. M&E helps us to keep track of whether our program is on track and provides information to help us steer the program in the desired direction.
M&E also has a role outside the program cycle that concerns communicating the results of the program to others. Most programs gain funding from external sources and a requirement of this funding is to report about the results of the program. Sometimes we also wish to communicate the results of our programs with other stakeholders such as the people we are trying to target for change.
